“As the eldest son I was expected to get any job I could to help my family - not chase my dreams.
Working in the urban farm garden at CCE I would encourage the students to join me digging trenches and planting seeds. It was a small step towards my vision of children and youth playing and working together in lush green spaces and urban gardens they had created themselves all over South Africa.
I still tend to the CCE garden before and after my lectures. And I have a maintenance job at another school in the evenings and weekends. I fit my reading around my work. It’s not easy [but] I know I will become a registered teacher and will give children and youth the knowledge, skills, and confidence to grow their own nourishing food and be able to provide for their own families.”
